Kayla Shin hopes to one day move to a more temperate climate, which makes sense since she’s consistently exposed to cold in all of her endeavors! May it be when she’s creating her homemade ice cream, selecting fish from the ice at the fish market where she works, or commuting through this winter’s treacherous snowy weather to get to school, she’s the poster child for being cool!

This young lady professionally multitasks between concocting and selling frozen treats and working her extraordinary “regular” job as a fishmonger. How on earth does a sweet-treat aficionado get mixed up in, well, fish?

“I still remember how my future boss, Charlie, came into my aunt’s fruit store, where I was working at the time. He came in to buy a peanut chew, and he was carrying a golf club. I got pretty freaked out because he stayed and then just started swinging his club inside her store. He said, “Don’t worry, I’m from next door.” Long story short, we developed a friendship very quickly and a few months later he asked me to fill in one day for one of his register girls and the rest is history!”

Kayla’s not only interested in having a job in the edibles industry, she can be considered a full-time foodie. Outside of her exhausting 12 hour days that she puts in five days per week, Kayla also creates ice cream without anything artificial in her spare time. After receiving an ice cream maker as a birthday gift a few years ago, she began to dream about making and selling her own brand. Because of her love and respect for food, she knew that her organic approach would distinguish her from the frozen food freeforall in the mainstream freezer. These days she sells 15-20 pints per week!

Talk about the best revenge being the ability to live well; Kayla’s cheerful personality was put through the ringer as a teenager.

“I was horribly teased for being overweight by a particular clique of guys. I always dreaded going to school from age 13-15 years old. I was referred to as a sumo wrestler and occasionally oinked at like a pig.”

Clearly she’s triumphed over her tormentors, as she’s made a pretty tasty endeavor out of her sweet-tooth, while maintaining her now-athletic build that she attributes to her daily pre-dawn yoga and pilates practice! Take that, bullies.

Kayla experiments with all different flavors and is constantly brainstorming add-ins and taste combinations to attempt.

“When I have a great meal that ends with a great dessert of cake, ice cream, or whatever, then I start thinking, “How can I make mine different from this but use it as an inspiration?”’ Yum!

For doing double duty when it comes to keeping things on ice, Kayla Shin is a Cool Girl!
