Portland DSC 1st Place Winner: Samantha!

WOW!  Every year, our Portland Design-a-Sock Contest seems to get better & better!  We honestly think there are no limits to the talent that this little town holds!  We’d like to extend our congratulations to the Top 3 winners and give each one a moment in the spotlight!

We tracked down our 1st place winner, Samantha, to get a little insight into the creativity behind “The Red Bird in the Tree”!

Name: Samantha Mash

Age: 21

Occupation: Student/Freelance Illustrator/Academic Tutor

Design History: By profession, no, I do not consider myself a designer. I am working towards a career in illustration, and while I can and do design fonts, logos, and clothing designs I’ve always just seen it as a off branch of my illustrative work.

How did you come up with your winning design?  What was the motivation behind it?: I thought about what sort of sock I would want to wear. I’ve always wanted a pair of wood grain/tree bark socks, but have yet to find a pair I found aesthetically pleasing. I’ve also wanted some non-traditional autumn themed socks. So ultimately I wanted to try and make a pair myself. To add a little interest I gave it a tree knot and a little bird. I though it might be interesting if you were wearing a tall boot to have the red bird peek out of the top of your shoes–or if worn with pants or a long skirt to have a fun design hidden away while your ankles have a fairly unassuming color and normal pattern. They could be worn more or less subtly depending on the person wearing them.

How long did it take you to create it? It honestly took me only a hour, which is very short for me. It normally takes me 10-25+ hours to make my illustrative work, and since I am a thesis student right now I didn’t have a lot of time on hand to devote to this. I simply knew that I needed to make something good and make it fast. $1000 can really motivate a person I suppose!

How many designs did you enter into this particular contest? Only this one design.

Did you have the design in mind before the contest ever started or were you motivated to enter once you saw the contest posted on Facebook? I was really motivated once I saw the post on Facebook. I knew I could really use the money and just started to think of a sock design I would have always wanted, but had never seen.

Have you ever entered a Sock It to Me Design-a-Sock Contest before? No, this was my first time.

Do you plan on entering another Sock It to Me Design-a-Sock Contest? Yes, totally, it was really fun.

What are your other favorite Sock It to Me styles? I really like the “Super Hero!” design, it is so clean and fun. I also love the Mondo Guerra houndstooth pattern, I’m a huge fan of his fashion.

How often do you wear your Sock It to Me’s? When it is cold out, especially in the winter when I am at home working on my illustrations.

How many pairs of Sock It to Me’s do you own? Right now, only one, but I hope to change that soon.

3rd Annual Global Design-a-Sock: Honorable Mentions

Whew!  We’ve been up to our ears in Design-a-Sock submissions, but, boy, was it worth it!  Have you checked out the 32 finalists on our Facebook page yet?!  Get your vote in ASAP here: http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10151476017390026.825079.237573925025&type=1.  If you haven’t, make sure you stop by our Facebook soon – voting ends Thursday, April 5th at 5 PM PST sharp!

We had an amazing time sifting through the THOUSANDS of entries this year!  Submissions poured in from all over the world – US, Colombia, Argentina, Singapore, West Indies, Indonesia, Germany, UK, Scotland, Wales, India, Portugal, the Netherlands, Sweden, New Zealand, Serbia, Denmark, Spain, Nigeria, France, Uruguay, Honduras, Norway, Turkey, Philippines, Australia, Slovakia, and Canada!  WOW, that’s a TON of Sock It to Me love!

And equally as exciting, our entrants ranged from ages 4 to 87 years old!  Who says coloring is only for kids?!  All we know is that someone out there has a totally awesome grandparent! 🙂

We can’t thank you all enough for participating in our Design-a-Sock Contest!  It’s like Christmas morning all over again when we receive a submission!  Our fans are definitely the most creative people you’ll ever find, and we wish we could produce each and every rad design that comes our way!

Unfortunately, because we’re limited by our current manufacturing methods, we simply aren’t able to produce some of the most amazing designs we receive.  With the way our socks are made, these intricate designs would make the socks WAY too tight (and no one likes a muffin top on their calf!)  We’d still like to give these great designs some credit though!  Check out these submissions that we fell in love with, but sadly aren’t able to produce:

Lauren Taylor’s “A-Mazing-Ing Socks”

Shari Cornish’s “Pie & Coffee”

Novica Milenkovic’s “Knight Irontoe”

Francesca Bryant’s “Tutenkamuen”

Pretty awesome creations, huh?  Hopefully one day soon we’ll be able to consider some of these beautiful designs!

So what are you waiting for?!  Make your way over to the Sock It to Me Facebook page to start voting!  Vote for your favorite designs by simply hitting “Like” for each image.  You can vote for as many designs as you want!  The ten designs with the most “Likes” after 5 PM PST on Thursday, April 5 will become our Top 10 Finalists!  The esteemed panel of judges at the Sock It to Me headquarters will then announce the top 3 winners!

This is how we do it, do it

The life of a sock design is very intriguing. Most people don’t realize that it can often take a full 90 days to bring the concept to the shelf. It may be long, but we feel it is the only way we can add our stamp of approval, with quality one of our utmost priorities. After all, we want you to love the socks you wear, and be proud of what you stand upon, from fit to finish.

Thinking the process is pretty interesting stuff, we thought you’d enjoy taking in the general timeline… which begins with a design, like the Grand Prize winning “Love Luma” submitted in last year’s Global Design-A-Sock Contest:

As we look at producing the sock, we have to first decide if we need to make any adjustments to the design to accommodate the thread alignment and how it could affect stretch and quality. Sometimes they are fine as they are; if not, we hire a designer to recreate the design for us (explaining why we ask for simple designs and limit colors used in our design contest).

We’re still talking about you

So the contest has come and go, and we’ve announced our winners. But we are still talking about you, and the designs that have floated our way, on clouds of sweet design fairies and unicorns. And we’re just so blessed to call you friends. I hope you know we feel that way about you.

We thought you might enjoy seeing some additional designs that drew our attention, just for the heck of it. And then check out the three winning designs at the bottom, if you haven’t already seen them. Thanks, again, for all of your participation! Enjoy your work week and remember to take a sock break every now and then. (That is when you put up your feet for a bit, showing off your adorably clad peds!)
